Fancied Up Pigs in a Blanket

Hello loves,

If you didn’t catch it, I did an Instagram live before New Years making fancied up pigs in a blanket. Pigs in a blanket are one of those childhood nostalgic foods that everyone loves. I mean, I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone that didn’t like them? I mean I guess if someone doesn’t like hotdogs they might not? But the little smoked sausages used for these are all beef and can be made into lots of different appetizers! I roast the sausages in the oven with maple syrup and whole grain mustard before wrapping them in the beloved crescent roll triangles. The result? A slightly caramelized, slightly sweet little smokie whose sauce gets baked into the crescent wrap. It’s an insanely flavorful pig in a blanket that has a touch of sweetness while still maintaining that classic taste we remember as kids.

These fancied up pigs in a blanket will for sure be a hit at your next gathering. Whether that be with one friend or 20. 🙂 Joe and I went to town so no judgement on how many people it takes to finish these bad boys.

Course: Appetizer
Keyword: appetizer, crescent rolls, lil smokies

Ingredients

  • 1 package lil smokies
  • 1 tbsp whole ground mustard
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tube crescent rolls
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375° and line a baking sheet with tin foil. Take smokies out of package and pat dry. Drizzle with a little bit of olive oil, maybe 1 tsbp, and give the pan a shake to coat them. Put in oven for 10 minutes.
  • While those are baking combine the whole grain mustard and maple syrup in a small bowl. After 10 minutes, remove the smokies from the oven and drizzle the maple/mustard mixture over the top. Bake for another 8 minutes, shaking the pan to mix them once throughout cooking.
  • While those are baking, lightly flour a work surface and unroll the crescent rolls. Cut each triangle into 3 smaller triangles. They don't have to be perfect.
  • When the smokies are done, remove from oven and let cool for a couple minutes. The take a smokie, being sure to scoop up some of the sauce from the pan, and place on the wide end of a crescent triangle. Roll towards the small end. Repeat until all the smokies are used. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden on top. Serve with dijon mustard + a little maple syrup for dipping. Enjoy!
