There are few things that make me more excited than those early Fall days… the breeze that has a chill to it, the leaves beginning to turn brown and the anticipation of all the holidays that will be coming. It’s my favorite time of year! While Los Angeles’ Fall may look a little different than most, i.e. more sunshine and not as cool of temps, it doesn’t damper my love for the season.
We have started having pancake/french toast Sundays in our house and I thought it would be fun to spice up the average french toast. Add a little citrus and you’re in business. There are bursts of orange flavor with each bite and combined with the fall spices, it really is a winning combination.
Orange Spiced French Toast
Orange Spiced French Toast
Ingredients
- 6 slices of brioche or challah
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp cloves
- zest of 1/2-3/4 of an orange
- butter
- maple syrup optional
Instructions
- In a wide rimmed, shallow bowl or pie pan, whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, spices and orange zest. Mix well to fully combine the eggs and break apart the white and yolks so it's a smooth texture. Now dip the brioche slices on both sides to soak up the liquid. I let each slice sit for about 4 seconds on each side then flip.
- In a large frying pan or griddle, melt some butter over medium/low heat. Once melted, add your bread. Each slice will cook for about 1-2 minutes on each side until lightly browned, then flip. Top with a pad of butter, some maple syrup and some orange zest.
This orange spiced french toast is so quick to throw together and you most likely have everything on hand. Let’s take a moment to discuss the bread type..
Brioche is the best for french toast in my opinion because of it’s buttery flavor but challah is a close second! You can of course use regular ole white bread if you don’t have either of these others on hand.
Tag me if you make it @Tessa_port. I love to see you making my recipes!
